Chemicals in Natural Products

When we hear, the word “chemical” we often associate this with toxic, something to be avoided. However, we may forget that everything around us is made of chemicals. The fruit in your fridge, the water you drink, the air that we breathe and even you and me. Yes, some chemicals are bad and toxic but not all are toxic and bad. Labelling ingredients gives us insight into what we are consuming or absorbing into our bodies. Sometimes we read the label and think, ‘this doesn’t sound natural’. This is where you may need to dig a little and have a look at what the chemical is and where it is derived from.

Just because a product is labelled natural, doesn’t mean it can’t cause a reaction. Natural products can still cause reactions for some people. They may not be allergic, but the product could cause some people to itch or develop a rash. So, although natural products are generally free of harsh chemicals, they are still made from chemicals and can cause reactions for some people. You could always check your product on a small area to see if you develop any symptoms. If you do, stop using the product.

Do what is right for you, the most important thing is that you choose products to suit your skin. Choosing simple products with fewer ingredients in your skincare products could help reduce your exposure to excessive ingredients.

Remember that natural skincare products can have combinations of chemicals. Doing a little bit of research and understanding chemical names on a product ingredient list, knowing what they are and what they do, can help you to make an informed decision about the products you choose to use.
